Gort Cancer Support Launch Aims to Provide Services
for Local People
The Gort Cancer Support Service was launched on June 21st at 7.30pm in the
The project was established in early 2007 by some members of Gort and District Lions Club and others and is managed by a voluntary committee made up of local people.
The project is the brainchild of Sadie McInerney (Chair) and Anne Quinn (Secretary) who organised a committee to provide the service for the town and surrounding areas. Other committee members are Mona Glynn (Treasurer), Geraldine Nolan (PRO), Mona Albertini, Nell Giblin, Agnes Fahy and Dairin Coen.
The service will provide information on all aspects of cancer and will have trained volunteers who can offer confidential listening, befriending and support. Those who use the service will have access to complimentary therapies. It is envisaged that limited financial assistance and transport to medical appointments may be available to those who are experiencing particular difficulties due to illness.
There will be no charge for the service and its aim is to provide a safe and confidential space where people who have had a cancer diagnosis, their families and friends, can talk and express their feelings and personal concerns.
Fundraising for this project has already begun – the “Alternative Miss Gort” event organised by Mike Finn was a great success and raised approximately €6,000.
A group of local women also ran in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon in
Opening hours will be on Monday evenings – 7pm to 9.30pm and Thursday mornings – 10am to 1pm. Telephone 086 – 1724500.
The launch promises to be an enjoyable evening. Anyone interested should attend. Those attending will have the chance to meet the committee and volunteers and get a general idea of what the service is about.
Light refreshments will be provided and the maximum possible involvement is being encouraged locally for the launch. Local people are being invited to take this opportunity to spend the evening of the Summer Solstice (Longest Day of the Year) to learn about a very worthwhile project in the local community.
